Arthur James John POOLEY was born in Worlington on 10th February 1890 (Mildenhall Q1-1890 4A:766) Baptised 24th August 1890, the son of James and Elizabeth POOLEY (née FROST).

1891 census... Aged 1, James was at Church Lane, Worlington with his father James POOLEY [25] agricultural labourer born Worlington and his mother Elizabeth [28] born West Row.

1901 census... Aged 11, he was at Church Lane, Worlington with his parents (father now a gamekeeper) and brother Herbert [9] and sisters Edith A [5] Florrie [3] and Maggie E [1]. All the children were born in Worlington.

1911 census... Aged 21, a worker on golf course, he was still at Church Lane with his parents and brother Herbert (caddy at golf course, sisters Edith, Florrie and Maggie and grandfather James Pooley [79].




He enlisted in Newmarket.
His Army records have not been found. The 1st Northamptonshires were in the Bazentin area in mid August. On 16th C & D Companies attacked and captured part of a new German trench running westward across the Bazentin-le Petit road from High Wood. They held it against counter attacks and renamed it Clark Trench after the officer in command of the position.
Of the 30 men of the battalion killed that day, half have no known grave.
